The LP listening project has me heading to Herbie Hancock records now. It’s a small number of records, and is totally missing some essential LPs…but I have those on CD.
Sextant – Not quite an acoustic record, not quite Headhunters, this fusion record is funkier than the first Weather Report record and, at times, nearly as abstract.
Thrust – Wow. This super-funky record is unsurpassable. A masterpiece. I’m trying to play “Absolute Proof” with my pals right now, and man, what an incredibly hard tune…
Man-Child – Funkier? Is that possible? Thunder Thumbs Johnson and Stevie Wonder make fantastic appearances on this record, too.
Quartet – This band is the V.S.O.P. band, minus Hubbard and Shorter, plus Wynton Marsalis. A great record, really, but the all-star stand-out for me is, as usual, Mr. Carter. He’s so incredibly solid on this album, it’s insane.
Future Shock – This LP is adorable. It’s from a digital world gone by; way, way, way pre-GarageBand and Logic, but not so far back in time that stuff was totally analog. Bill Laswell is great on this.
Enjoy,
R.
