Cases

No one wants to think about cases.  That is, no one wants to think about cases until their instrument is crushed by an airline or damaged by getting caught in a downpour.  I am psyched to have new Levy’s Leather cases for my electric basses.

Back in 1993, I needed a new case for my main electric bass, which at that time was an Alembic Series I.  But I had two electric basses, and so I had to lug around a stupid case (a world of 1980s pleather) and…another stupid case (an oversized “hard case” made mostly of foam).  That’s all fine and dandy if you have a car and if it doesn’t matter how many trips to the car it takes to unload gear.  Got a roadie?  All the better.  But in the city, with no car, relying on the subway, one trip is all you get.

My solution was to buy a 2-bass gig bag at EU Wurlizer on Mass Ave in Boston.  This way, I could carry both instruments at once, and since I still had the old stupid bags, I could also just take one bass, if I only needed one for the gig.

Fast forward 15 years or so, and that case was so worn out that I couldn’t reliably hold anything in it any longer.  I got in touch with the manufacturer, Levy’s Leathers, and sent in the bag.  They were so impressed by how worn out it was, they sent me a brand new one.  I remember an even exchange: they keep the destroyed case so they can make improvements, and I get a new case.  After another decade or so, that case was pretty worn out.  Another call to Levy’s, but this time, I’m not interested in the 2-bass gig bag any longer – which they don’t make anymore anyway.

“Are you still playing?” Eden asked (from Levy’s).  “Yes,” and I sent her a photograph of a recent recording session with me playing electric bass.  A quick conversation and a few emails, and I have two new cases for my electric basses, that I love.  I haven’t taken them through a Nor’easter yet, but the reviews online are all about how durable and protective these cases are.  Very psyched to break in my CM19L cases – thanks Eden!
