I never wanted to buy 45s. Ever. But, here I am, buying 45s.The reason is Stevie Wonder. I teach a class on his music at Berklee, and so I’m collecting his records. I never wanted to be a completist, either, yet here I am. So, while on vacation, I found a bunch of records, and found myself buying these:
Jermaine Jackson – “I Think it’s Love” – Interesting that this single, co-written by Stevie Wonder, is supposed to only be on one side. The B side is supposed to be “Voices in the Dark,” but nope. Two sides of “I Think it’s Love.”
Stevie Wonder – “Love Light in Flight/It’s More than You” – From The Woman in Red. Side A rules.
Paul McCartney – “Ebony and Ivory” – Man, when this came out, I lost it. Two superheroes!!! Together! Maybe it hasn’t quite made it to the level of amazing as other things by each cat, separately, but still. Obviously, the amazing part is the Stevie part. But Paul ain’t no slouch, and George Martin has a few great things up his sleeve on this track.
Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” – This 45 rpm has the instrumental version on the B side, sort of like the 12″ version that I also have. They pushed this tune!
USA for Africa – “We are the World” – Ok, so consider this: Stevie vs Bruce Springsteen on the way out, to end the song. The B side is “Grace” by Quincy Jones, which was the “Official Music” of the 1984 Olympics.
All for now.
