Another hodge podge of recordings – John Denver through Willie Dixon.
Listening
More Davis through Deodato
Ok, after the Miles Davis extravaganza, I’m, well, actually I sort of want to go back and do that again. What amazing music! But next up are some fantastic records, and it’s exciting because it shows why I started this project in the first place! I heard each of these at least one time, but pretty much just checked it out, said “Yep, that’s cool,” and then put it away. So revisiting records like these really makes me happy. That’s so corny. Miles Davis LPs
Ok, so this presents a bit of a connundrum, just like the John Coltrane post a few months ago. I have a CD compilation of Miles Davis recordings on Prestige (that rocks), and it’s packaged like an LP. So, I listened to it.
Cruz through Davis (Lockjaw)
The next batch of LPs in my alphabetical listening project is a pretty broad ranging one: (more…)
Cowell and Cream
Hello everyone and happy listening! Next up in the alphabetical universe are Stanley Cowell and Cream. (more…)
Coryell and Costello
Another thing I love about this listening project is thinking of people who don’t belong together, er, together. So this stack of LPs is Larry Coryell and Elvis Costello. (more…)
Compost, Con Brio, Corea
Next up in the LP listening project: (more…)
Coltrane LPs
Ok, continuing on with listening to my record collection in alphabetical order. This time, John Coltrane, with one tricky aspect: a LP shaped box of CDs. (more…)
Wow. Sad. RIP.
One of my ALL TIME favorite bassists past away today – Donald “Duck” Dunn. He’s such a legend, it’s impossible to express how amazing and important he was. He was funky, solid, interesting, quirky, grooving and also groovin’ – that’s right – groovING and groovIN’. For real, shaw ’nuff.
I remember the first time I ever saw him, on video, of course. It was in the Blues Brothers. Here’s my favorite scene from that movie – Dunn shows up in a green shirt at 0:27.
And then, later, he was on the Eric Clapton record “Behind the Sun,” and the video for “Forever Man” features a slick Dunn. I totally ate that record up when it came out. I also recall thinking that I needed a denim trench coat after seeing that video…
What a sad moment. Much love to his family, and respect to the great master.
R.
PS – ok, really, this is probably my favorite scene in The Blues Brothers, but Dunn isn’t in it.
Ornette Coleman
I have tons of Ornette recordings, but this being an LP-specific listening project, I’m limited to: (more…)
