Check out “Eulogy” from the Either/Orchestra’s 25th anniversary concert in New York City.
By the time I joined the E/O in the fall of 1997, they had already toured all over the US, put out several records and were nominated for a Grammy. Since my time in the band, we have extended our reach throughout Europe and parts of Africa. Among the incredible things about this group is the “family tree”. In this clip, you can hear three bassists, two drummers, two keyboard players, one guitarist and one percussionist, and a host of horns. It’s a pretty big group of musicians for a band that was normally a ten piece group (plus or minus at various points). Among these musicians are John Medeski, Matt Wilson and Jeremy Udden (my Study of Light partner). On the Boston concert, we also heard from MacArthur Fellow, Miguel Zenon, who was in the band while he was a Berklee student.
Russ Gershon wrote “Eulogy” while he a grad student at Tufts. This particular reflection is on Elvin Jones and Steve Lacy, who had passed away recently.
