Improvisation on Chopin’s Waltz No.7 in C-sharp Minor, Op.64, Iridium, NYC 2010

I have known Rani Katsenelenbogen, David Zoffer and Gary Fieldman for a VERY long time.  David and Gary and I were in a honors group at NEC when we were students in 1995, and I got to know Rani shortly thereafter, mostly from being in George Russell’s big band.  Those three musicians are monsters.

Several years ago, Rani kindly invited us to play a CD release concert with him at the Iridium in NYC, so we got together to rehearse a couple of times, then Rani rented a van, and I drove us to NY.  It was a great day, and a super fun concert.  In keeping with last week’s bootleggy video, here’s another.  This one was recorded by one of Rani’s students.  Even though the video is grainy and the focus moves around a lot and the audio is super low fi, I love that his shows how well we all connect.  I mean, David and I can sometimes complete one another sentences, and I can still feel Gary Fieldman’s quarter note, and I am always amazed by what Rani can do – his imagination is phenomenal.
